Good evening everyone! Today’s record is a bit of a loud one. I’ll tell you all this. As a huge fan of improvised music i personally haven’t been too keen on stuff that is overly loud. Even though a lot of this music is sometimes it’s just an overwhelming loud. A lot of the European records mostly but of course there are exceptions ( Luna Surface, Echo, Black Woman etc…) . But this album while is is absolutely an overwhelming loud is very distinct amongst those sort of “Freak Out” records I sometimes call them because it is most definitely the most chaotic record I’ve ever heard. This is crazy to me because there are other records with larger groups like the ones i mentioned earlier and especially Manfred Schoof’s European Echoes which became a synchronous noise that record especially is very rich in sound . Nipples though is amazing to me because the music is still so powerful yet it’s a smaller group then the records i mentioned. The first track alone the Sextet track is bound to leave you speechless. A noisy conversation each musician getting an equal chance to speak ( except Derek Bailey who just makes wakes throughout the piece rearing his head in eventually which is a tiny shame because i love Bailey’s work but i kind of love it when he does this ). Anyway aha each musician gives it their all. The first track, the sextet track Nipples is exactly as I’ve been describing a noisy conversation. With Peter Brötzmann and Evan Parker on Tenor Sax giving shreds of fury, Derek Bailey like I said adding to the waves, Fred Van Hove with a piercing Piano, Buschi Niebergall with an enticing bass and Han Bennik with his usual wildness on drums. This is absolutely my favorite track because it shows each of their chaotic tendencies and together it’s a sense of power and a frenzy i don’t think has ever been close to replicating. The second track, Tell A Green Man is also amazing but not as loud aha. Same lineup minus Mr. Bailey and Parker. Both promising improvisations showcasing that these musicians aren’t to be messed with. Highly recommend it if you want to get into the louder side of this music this is definitely a great starter. Hope you all enjoy!!
